Nearly three years ago, VinoTastr (vinotastr.com), a company headquartered in Baton Rouge, contacted RSP, Inc., for assistance taking its concept to market. The company had already created the components for a unique product called the VinoTastr Discovery Kit, which combines taste technology with scientific innovation. The discovery kit includes four test strips that are used to analyze a consumer’s palate, helping a wine-curious taster uncover sensitivities to different wine characteristics. With a QR code to access the VinoTastr app, the user can find out which taste profile fits their preferences. The kit empowers consumers to choose wines confidently and provides retailers the opportunity to better understand and cater to their customers’ preferences.

With a product that would appeal to future wine connoisseurs and retailers, VinoTastr knew it had a winning concept, but needed a manufacturing partner to help execute their vision. The goal? An easy-to-use, high-quality package that would fit VinoTastr’s values and sustainability goals.

Why VinoTastr Chose RSP, Inc.

As VinoTastr searched for a manufacturing partner, RSP was strongly recommended by others in the wine industry and by VinoTastr’s regulatory attorney. They suggested reaching out to Mike Ryan and the team at RSP to explore sourcing crucial materialsfor the kit. David Watts, VinoTastr’s chief operating officer, says that “as conversations evolved, it became evident that RSP’s manufacturing, assembly and fulfillment capabilities were a perfect match for bringing our VinoTastr Discovery Kit to life.”

Refined at Every Step: RSP’s Engineering and Prototyping Services

Initially, VinoTastr had only a sketch. But the engineering team at RSP partnered with VinoTastr to create a prototype, and together, they brought the discovery kit to life. Since then, Watts says, they have “navigated multiple iterations, each refined with the expertise of RSP’s team. Their guidance allowed us to develop a product that is user-friendly, cost-effective, and of the highest quality.”

Experts in Sustainable Packaging

Through RSP’s prototyping services, VinoTastr was able to experiment with different types of materials for the kit’s pouches, trays and seal components, all essential to ensuring the reliability of the test strips. Ultimately, VinoTastr chose 70% recycled ocean-bound plastic for the internal parts. Watts says, “The commitment of RSP to eco-friendly alternatives aligns perfectly with our values. Additionally, their innovation in developing a new heat seal process was crucial to the success of our latest product version. The patience and dedication shown by Mike, Jason and the entire team during this iterative process were truly remarkable.”

Manufacturing Success with RSP

During the two and a half years VinoTastr has worked with RSP as a manufacturing partner, VinoTastr has ensured success by offering excellent customer service. Watts credits RSP’s team with playing “an integral role in establishing the assembly process, providing invaluable support and answers to our numerous questions throughout each assembly cycle.” Watts says, “Our journey with RSP has been marked by exceptional interactions with team members such as Scott and Yomma, who handle our shipping and fulfillment queries with precision. Jodie and Julianna have been a great help with invoicing. Every interaction with RSP has been first-rate from day one.”

A Sweet Finish

From start to finish, VinoTastr was pleased with the process of working with RSP on the discovery kit. “From the outset, we recognized that RSP’s professionalism, attention to detail and timely execution would significantly benefit our product and customers. We would not hesitate to recommend RSP to any friend or client in need of a reliable development and manufacturing partner,” says Watts. “VinoTastr’s partnership with RSP, Inc. has been instrumental in our journey from concept to market. Their expertise and dedication have allowed us to provide a unique and valuable product to wine enthusiasts everywhere. Thank you, RSP, for being a key part of our story!”

Curious about prototyping a product? Discover how RSP leveraged its supply chain expertise to help outdoor outfitter Fish Gods prototype a collapsible bag to help their customers clean up rivers and lakes while fishing.

From Drawing to Design

Fish Gods, a company born out of a passion for the outdoors, was founded by two outdoor enthusiasts who were troubled by the alarming amount of plastic pollution they discovered when fishing in freshwater lakes and rivers.

The Clean Earth Bag by Fish Gods

Fish Gods had a visionary idea – a plastic net bag that would enable fellow outdoor enthusiasts and anglers to effortlessly collect plastic waste they encounter in the field. This product, known as the Clean Earth Bag, was carefully designed to meet specific criteria and make a meaningful impact. Says Fish Gods founder Tyler Waltenbaugh, “We designed our bag to be durable, attachable, collapsible, drainable, and reusable! Our bag has the key features outdoor enthusiasts need to combat plastic pollution.”

RSP Leverages Deep Supply Chain Knowledge

After locating RSP on the web and discussing the product, Fish Gods took a significant step forward by partnering with RSP to prototype the design. RSP, a custom manufacturer and leader in plastic molding and contract manufacturing leveraged its global supply chain and relationships to contract with a textile factory in China capable of fabricating the bag.

After several rounds of samples, the product was perfected to Fish Gods’ specifications and ready to produce. “Our experience working with RSP on prototyping has been amazing. They were able to take our design and turn it into a working prototype,” says Waltenbaugh. “They were able to work with us through any design changes and get our product ready for the market.”

The Clean Bag started on Kickstarter
The Clean Bag is meant to be carried into the field so fellow outdoors people and those who fish can easily collect plastic waste they find.

Making the Cut with Communication

As with any relationship, good communication is key to a successful partnership when prototyping a product, and RSP takes pride in keeping the customer apprised of product developments. Waltenbaugh says of Fish Gods’ prototyping experience with RSP, “I am very impressed with how RSP and Matt are with communication and answering all questions that come up.” When asked why Fish Gods chose RSP, he stressed that it stood out for customer service. “RSP provides quality work and cares about the needs of their customers. The great communication we received from RSP throughout this project is the best we have encountered.”

Veridt, an innovative OEM of intelligent credential readers for both the public and private sectors, is a longtime customer of RSP. Since 1999, Veridt has manufactured a range of customizable hardware that keeps critical infrastructure such as maritime ports safe and secure with card readers, keypads and biometric devices built to withstand heavy use and extreme environments.

More than ten years ago, Veridt needed a manufacturing partner to assist with its silicon-based keypads for a new line of products. Veridt leveraged the RSP engineering team’s design expertise and was pleased with the result. “Our experience working with RSP’s engineering team was reliable and stress free. RSP is great at formulating a design from small amounts of detail provided. As a customer, you can be engaged as you want throughout the process and either way, they produce quality results.”

Its company’s products support critical infrastructure, so Veridt needs a manufacturing partner that can deliver timely. Veridt credits the companies’ continued successful relationship to RSP’s excellent communication and customer service. “The communication is great – the team members are always very responsive. They offer great pricing that is far below the value their products bring to Veridt. RSP presents strong consistency, so we can count on their team to deliver products on time.”

Because of its philosophy of supporting local vendors and bolstering the local economy, Veridt first chose RSP for the two companies’ proximity. But it has stayed with RSP because of the positive experience. “[RSP] is efficient to work with. Veridt appreciates RSP’s expertise and knowledge as a supplier because it allows us to focus on the daily tasks most important to operating a business.”

During their decade-long partnership, RSP and Veridt have strengthened their partnership, working together on manufacturing plastic housing for Veridt’s Stealth readers and on card readers for its Stealth Lite products, as well as internal wire harnesses. “RSP performs above industry expectations/standards,” Veridt says. “Our long-term relationship with RSP speaks to our continued excellent experience with [them].”

Rawrycat is a pet products company dedicated to creating high-end pet products. In response to the global pandemic, they decided to use their design skills to create a patent-pending face mask, the Rawrycat Mask for humans!

Rawrycat pet products are designed to last a long time, serve as beautiful accent pieces in the home and create a warm and safe environment for your pets. The Rawrycat Mask for humans was inspired by the same principles, to create something long lasting and beautiful that provides a safe and comfortable environment for the user. The masks are made with dishwasher-safe food-grade silicone and feature disposable four-layer nonwoven, melt-blown fabric filters for easy breathing.

David Reichmann, the owner of Rawrycat, found RSP, Inc. through a Google search. When asked why they chose RSP, Reichmann offered, “After speaking to a wide array of suppliers and manufacturers throughout the world, we chose RSP because of their expertise, helpful suggestions and quick and constant communication and feedback. Despite the ongoing global supply chain challenges, RSP performed excellently.”

RSP responded quickly throughout the process, leveraging our team’s experience in mask design and production. Reichmann commented, “Working with Jason [the project engineer] has been great! The tooling and molding team did a great job. I have recommended RSP to several friends already!”

]]>
In May 2019, Dillon Ambrose, entrepreneur and co-founder of BOX-Ae-RATOR, contacted RSP, Inc. for a quote to manufacture the company’s innovative wine-aerating product, the only one of its kind specifically designed to aerate boxed wine.

Improving Quality and Drinkability Out of the Box

Aeration, or the process of allowing wine to “breathe” by exposing it to air, has long been a technique wine drinkers use to allow volatile compounds that affect taste to dissipate. When wines breathe, taste improves. Nearly all wines benefit from this process.

As boxed wine, often maligned by serious wine drinkers for its historically poor quality, has seen its popularity surge, BOX-Ae-RATOR saw an opportunity to tap into the market and to help wine drinkers better enjoy their budget-friendly wines. As product quality improves, sales explode, and more and more brands, including some traditional and familiar names, bring their product offerings and elevate the market, boxed wine is shedding its bad reputation. According to Forbes, the industry saw unprecedented growth in 2018 of 14–20%, with the growth trend continuing in 2019 and 20201.

Despite preconceptions about packaging from wine purists, boxed wine protects the wine from UV light, making the shelf life longer and the quality high, and winemakers are taking notice. It also costs less to make and sell and has a fraction of the carbon footprint of its glass bottle counterparts. While the BOX-Ae-RATOR product does cater to the boxed wine market, this versatile product can be used to aerate more traditional bottled or even canned wines.

Making the Right Choice for Contract Manufacturing

After evaluating the options, Ambrose and BOX-Ae-RATOR chose RSP as the product’s contract manufacturer for a few reasons. For convenience, RSP’s location was attractive to Ambrose, as both companies are located in the Milwaukee area. However, RSP is proud to offer the same level of service to local and national customers alike. RSP’s wide range of offerings, including engineering evaluation and prototyping services to help make decisions about the product, as well as RSP’s dedication to customer service and great pricing, made RSP an excellent fit for BOX-Ae-RATOR’s needs.

When asked why he chose RSP for his company’s contract manufacturing partner, Dillon said, “We chose RSP because they not only seek to manufacture, they work to partner with you, making a product that I want to sell, but they are proud to manufacture. They seek quality and have pride in the product that they are producing.”

Learn more about the BOX-Ae-RATOR!

Successful Partnership from Prototype to Product

Once BOX-Ae-RATOR chose RSP to be its manufacturing partner, RSP began work on creating the prototype for testing. The BOX-Ae-RATOR product is a silicone cradle that holds a wine aerator inside of it. This cradle is attached to the spout of a box of wine, allowing the user to easily aerate the wine as it is poured from the box. RSP and BOX-Ae-RATOR sat down to discuss the initial product design and needs.

Together, RSP and Ambrose evaluated several options for the design of the product both from an end-user experience and manufacturing standpoint. Through this process, RSP’s engineering team reviewed and made small adjustments to the design, coming up with two designs that both teams agreed were worth prototyping.

From there RSP and BOX-Ae-RATOR built a prototype compression-molding tool that made both versions of the product. Once the tooling was built, RSP made samples of each version of the product, and BOX-Ae-RATOR tested both versions and chose the one that seemed to feel and work the best.

When asked about working with RSP’s engineering team during this process, Ambrose spoke highly of his experience. “Our experience working with RSP’s engineering team was phenomenal. While I originally came in with a prototype and drawings, RSP partnered with me to make a product that would be able to be mass-produced and ready to tool. RSP tooled and got me prototypes that worked perfectly. RSP was cost-effective and great to work with at every step in this process.”

Once the product entered production, Ambrose found that communication and RSP’s dedication to customer service were the key to success. When asked about his experience with RSP’s production of his product, Dillon said, “RSP has been an incredible partner for manufacturing. On my first shipment, there were some issues, and rather than bow out, they stepped up, fixed the problem, and worked with me to solve the problem for the next time. The next shipment was great, [due] to RSP owning the process and taking pride in its product to its client. Just fantastic.”

Having been away from the photography industry for nine years, Jim Clark, owner of Smart Team LLC, returned to make a new class of smart controllers for lighting and camera equipment. Finding the right manufacturing partner was going to be critical to the success of this product.

Clark discovered RSP from an internet search for molders and manufacturers with expertise in elastomeric keypad production. After some discussions, it was clear that RSP could provide many more services and products.

RSP helped bring Smart Team LLC’s new class of lighting products to market.
RSP helped bring Smart Team LLC’s new class of lighting products to market.

The new class of lighting products developed by Smart Team work like modern smart watches, smartphones and other intuitive touch screen interface devices. The FUSION TLC Raven is the first product offering from Smart Team. The Fusion TLC (total light control) product brings many different brands of photographic flashes into a single controller device, an industry first.

Smart Team used RSP for a wide range of services to develop and manufacture the FUSION TLC Raven, including:

RSP further added value to the project with the engineering team’s expert guidance. Clark said, “We had some parts re-engineered to be more manufacturable using RSP’s services. This was quick and cost effective. Simple fixes were often just suggested free of charge by RSP engineers.”

Once the product reached the prototype stage, RSP worked closely with Smart Team to ensure the many parts required for the FUSION TLC Raven would be ready for final production. The complex product required many components in multiple materials, all of which RSP was able to manufacture in a timely manner. Clark commented, “[We] had plastic molds, sheet metal parts, keypads, PC boards, molded metal parts and many other types of parts made by RSP for our somewhat complex mechanical assemblies. This process was usually quick, and I was kept informed of the dates on a regular basis. We had over 30 different parts in our assembly, many of them custom prototypes before making final production tooling.”

While Smart Team worked initially with the US-based RSP team on earlier stages of the project, they also worked directly with the China project team. Clark noted, “We have worked significantly with Jason Sun [Shenzhen China project manager] as our primary manufacturing line interface. He has been great to work with.” Clark was particularly impressed with the smooth communication between the Shenzhen- and US-based teams. “After getting in first samples on a variety of different parts from RSP and a successful interaction with RSP staff in both the US and overseas, I was convinced the process was easy, quick and not overly burdened with red tape or confusion. My needs were understood easily by RSP staff,” said Clark.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, few things were in such high demand as bicycles. Sports Texas Inc., the owner and designer of the Power Cycle, a custom stationary bike, had been developing and fine-tuning their product with RSP since 2017. The Power Cycle is a unique stationary bike in that it leverages an inertial load to efficiently produce results with two minutes of intense exercise over a ten-minute span, utilizing high-intensity interval training to maximize results in a short period of time. It provides feedback on power output so the user can track progress as the bike increases fat burning by up to 43% and increases muscle size, strength and power while developing the user’s aerobic endurance.

After three years of development, in early 2020, as the Power Cycle’s first production order was placed, the availability of materials for bikes seemed to disappear overnight as lockdown rules required gyms to close and people sought recreation. RSP had to leverage its strong ties and experience in the market to make sure the items on order were procured and locked in for on-time delivery to meet growing consumer demand for at-home exercise equipment.

Aside from leveraging supply chain expertise, RSP assisted with the prototyping and manufacturing of the Power Cycle, including a plastic molded enclosure. Sports Texas Inc. company founder and the inventor of the bike, Ed Coyle, was particularly pleased with RSP’s prototyping expertise. “Our experience working with RSP on prototyping was excellent,” he said. “Mike Ryan as well as the Chinese employees were attentive to details and responded immediately. Kyle [project manager] and his team interacted with the vendors and went on-site to make sure the modifications we needed were made properly.”

The Challenge: Improve the VR User Experience

For over five years, the team at RSP has been working with BeBop Sensors, an innovative company that creates smart fabric and sensor products for the consumer health, robotics and virtual reality sectors. BeBop Sensors wanted to develop a product that addressed a number of deficits in the virtual reality experience. Most important, they realized that tactile sensation in VR had not kept pace with technological advances in VR headsets. This meant that while users were seeing and hearing VR worlds in new and enhanced ways, they were not as immersed in them as they might be with a more responsive tactile experience. The BeBop team also knew from their research that fine motor skills in VR are difficult and that users, especially new ones, find the VR experience unintuitive.

To solve these problems, BeBop began developing a proprietary fabric for use in a new VR glove product. This sensor-rich piezoresistive—or pressure-sensitive—material offered the potential for more immersion into VR worlds, which would transform the user experience.

Solution: The Forte Data VR Glove

Once the BeBop team had developed the smart fabric, they set to work on designing the company’s Forte Data Glove product. The Forte Data Glove is a full-featured VR haptic glove that combines accurate finger tracking and rotational sensors with lightning-fast latency to allow for truly immersive VR experiences. The glove’s fabric enables users to feel objects in the virtual world by creating complex vibrations with the on-board granular synthesizer. By sending unique sensations to the actuators on each finger and the palm, the gloves can craft sensations that have never been felt before.

What Programs Do These VR Gloves Work With

The virtual reality haptic gloves were designed to connect with a range of VR headsets, including Oculus and Windows Mixed Reality, and support a variety of major programming environments including Unreal, Unity, Python, Vive, C++ and Java.

There are four primary differentiating features of the Forte Data Glove that make it unique in the VR space.

Extremely low-latency performance over Bluetooth and USB provides almost instantaneous response, mimicking real-world experience. The powerful, responsive haptics feature gives immersive touch feedback. An open-palm design offers hygienic, lightweight and breathable function. Its intuitive development allows users to pinch, grab and interact with the virtual world with their own hands.

The Forte Data Glove was designed for several use cases across the markets BeBop serves. These include hands-on training; medical data collection for clinical trials and rehabilitation; object control of drones or robots using hand motion; user-interface control for navigating 3D maps or data; and design and testing of products in virtual reality.

Longtime Partnership with RSP

Once the BeBop team had designed the Forte Data Glove prototype, they needed a contract manufacturer to help bring the product to market. With more than 50 years of experience as a full-service turnkey manufacturer, RSP Inc. has partnered with countless entrepreneurs at every stage of the process, from prototyping and product design to logistics like packaging and shipping.

After a decade-long relationship with RSP, BeBop’s founder, audio pioneer Keith McMillen, had experienced RSP’s demonstrated expertise firsthand and knew RSP was the right contract manufacturer for the Forte Data Glove. McMillen had come to expect “excellent customer service, skilled and creative manufacturers, and competitive and transparent pricing” from RSP. The RSP team delivered once again.

RSP’s expert teams collaborated with one another and with BeBop to efficiently produce and bring the Forte Data Glove to market. Some of the many ways RSP assisted include:

 • Providing a design for manufacturing review: the engineering team took something that requires hours to assemble in a “lab” setting and created an efficient mass-production method.
 • Improving assembly and quality: RSP’s manufacturing team played a role in developing custom equipment fixtures.
 • Implementing a multi-disciplinary approach: the project team dedicated engineering resources as well as a rapid-response manufacturing team to quickly turn around prototypes and modified samples to deliver client solutions.

When asked how RSP performs as a manufacturing partner, McMillen reflected on RSP’s expertise and signaled a bright outlook for the companies’ future partnerships. “RSP’s years of manufacturing experience augments our ability to bring challenging and cutting-edge products to market,” said McMillen. “We have brought products to market with them and intend to do so with many more to come.”

As entrepreneurs ourselves, we know how important it is to find a manufacturing partner you can trust for your own innovative products. From prototyping to full-scale production, we can help make your idea a reality. Contact us today and make RSP your contract manufacturing partner.

RSP is a full-service manufacturing solution provider offering engineering, prototyping and full-scale production. While some clients use only a single service, others, like RSP customer PAQ, utilize all three.

PAQ is a premier pre-roll packaging provider in the USA and Canada. Their product is child resistant (per CFR 1700 standards), water resistant, crush proof and odor resistant. PAQ partners with major brands in the industry that sell millions of products per year, all of which are produced by RSP Inc. at our facilities in China and shipped directly into retailer distribution channels.

How the Manufacturing Partnership Started

PAQ initially reached out to RSP in 2017 for the production of the now industry-leading JPAQ enclosure. RSP provided a quote for production when PAQ was just a start-up in a growing and highly competitive field. However, PAQ clearly had a product that met a market demand, essentially, a childproof multipack for pre-roll sellers.

At the time, the industry had been selling pre-rolls singly rather than in a multipack format. Having a new child-resistant package that stored five pre-rolls instead of one enabled retailers to increase their sales fivefold. It also allowed the end user to purchase and store five pre-rolls for extended periods of time with confidence, knowing the product would be fresh and protected. PAQ had intended to contract another manufacturer directly in China but ultimately chose to work with RSP because we offer a “best of both worlds” solution: USA-based headquarters and customer service plus offshore pricing with our control of several low-cost factories in China.

Perfecting the Product

Once PAQ chose RSP as their manufacturing partner, we began mutually working to improve the product’s functionality and saleability, with the end goal of growing sales. RSP conducted a comprehensive review of the initial design. At that time, PAQ had some prototypes made using a prototype tool set. As is typical with custom-made products, the initial samples were not perfect, and some minor adjustments were required to improve the end user experience. RSP thoroughly reviewed the issue and suggested changes that would make the product both easier to open and child resistant per CFR 1700 requirements.

In addition to reviewing design considerations, RSP also tested numerous blends of polypropylene (PP) to find the perfect balance of flexibility and rigidity for good user experience and functionality. PAQ found tremendous value during this period in visiting our factories in China, working on-site to perform R&D with the RSP engineering and production team.

RSP has an open-door policy*, allowing our customers to visit our factories, meet our engineers and employees, and discuss their product directly with the team in order to align goals and efficiently produce a world-class product. These visits were an integral step in the final development of the product to ensure it would be made as envisioned by PAQ. If you are considering using RSP as your manufacturing partner, our open-door policy and general transparency is a great benefit. *Please note, during the COVID-19 pandemic it might be difficult for some clients to visit our facility. Feel free to schedule a virtual tour and talk with our team!

Partnership Success

Since the launch of the JPAQ, RSP has manufactured millions of cases that PAQ has sold throughout the US and Canada. RSP also engineered and developed two new products, the JPAQ Duo and JPAQ Trio, which are slightly smaller versions of the JPAQ that allow sales of two or three pre-rolls per package. RSP engineers based these designs on the principles that made the JPAQ work, and with our partnership and experience, we were able to expedite the engineering and prototype processes, getting the product to market faster than anticipated. Because of these successes, PAQ continues to work with RSP on several new and exciting products slated to come to market in 2021.

Sustainable Manufacturing

PAQ and its customers are environmentally conscious, so PAQ was excited to see that RSP has partnered with Oceanworks to offer ocean-reclaimed and recycled materials. Through this partnership, RSP and PAQ have already removed 13,838 pounds of plastic from the ocean!

Currently, PAQ and RSP are investigating the long-term use of these materials as well as other eco-friendly blends of material that contain fibrous plants such as hemp, jute and bamboo. If you are considering using eco-friendly material for your product, RSP offers a number of possible durable solutions.

PAQ and RSP have forged a great business relationship, one we are very excited to continue for years to come. Listen to Brett Gelfand, one of the owners and founders of PAQ, attest to our bright future as manufacturing partners in his video testimonial below.
